Due to frequent political changes in Northern Ireland the health structure varies from that in Scotland, England and Wales.

The organisation is on a hierarchal basis.

Level 1. Department of Health & Social Services (Westminster)

Level 2. Department of Health (Stormont)

Level 3. Area Boards (currently 4) Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western

Level 4. Local Trusts are responsible for hospital and community services

Level 5. Primary Care Trusts/Local Health & Social Care Groups are responsible for services in local areas.

Level 6. Individual General Practices
